ANNUNCIATION
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Columbus, Ohio, was the twenty-fourth Greek community in the United States to start a parochial school. It began in the fall of 1983 with kindergarten through third grade. The first teacher was Mrs. Janet Maragos. Today, the school has kindergarten through sixth grade. It is fully accredited and has two full- time teachers, Cheryl Uhren and Lorna Haines, who teach the twelve students who are enrolled in the 1987-88 school year. Two part-time teachers are also involved. Litsa Kozyris teaches the Greek language, and Maria Kididis teaches religion. The school has passed inspection for charter by the State of Ohio. While the school has been a noble endeavor, low enrollments and problems of getting transportation from the Columbus Public Schools have forced the school to re evaluate. At the General Assembly meeting of November 1, 1987, the community voted to close the school with the hope of reopening it again at a later year.

MARATHON RACE

As the Greek community has gained acceptance in American society and as the identity with our roots has become more stylish, we have noticed more an more attention directed our way. For the first Columbus
Marathon several years ago race organizers asked us to provide two people in Greek costumes to crown the winners. To commemorate the famous run from Marathon to Athens by Pheidippides in 490 B.C., the church annually sends two representatives to place the
laurel wreaths on the heads of the male and female winners. In 1987 our community was represented by Marylyn Altemus and Argirios Ragias, both dressed in the costumes of the classical period of Greece.
